Here are some alternative histories to ponder over from this interesting site...
A Russian America
Fact - the Russian Empire had settlements in Alaska, the West Coast of America and Hawaii from 1733 to 1867
The What if... instead of the Russian colonies petering out they had decided to consolidate and expand into a Russian Pacific and sparking a very different timeline as the major powers inevitably battle for control...
"This settlement has been organized through the initiative of the Company. Its purpose is to establish a settlement there or in some other place not occupied by Europeans, and to introduce agriculture there by planting hemp, flax and all manner of garden produce; they also wish to introduce livestock breeding in the outlying areas, both horses and cattle, hoping that the favourable climate, which is almost identical to the rest of California, and the friendly reception on the part of the indigenous people, will assist in its success.
— From an 1813 report to Emperor Alexander from the Russian American Company Council, concerning trade with California and the establishment of Fort Ross"
Interestingly the Russians have a claim on Fort Ross (derived from from the Russian Ros or Rus) in Sonoma County, California to this day as they claim the land title was never transferred as they were never paid...
Germany doesn't initiate WW1. The war could have been cancelled due to Austro-Hungarian intransigence.... there would be a war of some description but when and perhaps who got involved (after all the British Empire might not have entered WW1 if it wasn't for a Belgian request to do so).
This meant no WW2 (though it might have been what to us would have been a rather strange WW1). But if there was a WW1 and a WW2 started but Hitler hadn't opened the war up on two fronts.... what then?
What if Alexander the Great hadn't died so young.... would an expansion westward towards Rome & Carthage have been his next jaunt? In any event would the empire he had greatly expanded have remained as a whole, rather than split up amongst his generals?
What if the British had lost what became Canada during the 7 Years War or even the East India Company failed to take control of the Indian sub-continent (it could easily have been the French or a sub-Continent shared between two rival trading companies).
