If German antitank units are imagined as a static hedge of guns waiting to be charged, the early-to-mid-war record will not support the picture. They were usedflexibly (higher-echelon guns pushed to the point of need),aggressively (committed into the attack wherever enemy armour was expected),nimbly (short bounds from fire position to fire position),efficiently (Flak pressed into a primary or secondary antitank mission), andas flanking support — including in direct support of armoured units. The primary mission remained defensive. The method of performing it was often offensive.[R1][R2]
Evidence policy. Where possible this article rests on wartime Allied intelligence and captured German material:U.S. War Department, Military Intelligence Service, Artillery in the Desert, Special Series No. 6 (25 November 1942);MIS Tactical and Technical Trends No. 10 (22 October 1942) and No. 14 (17 December 1942);U.S. Intelligence Bulletin, November 1943, on Flak in the field;TM-E 30-451 Handbook on German Military Forces.Where TOE numbers or late-war SP mixes vary by formation, entries are marked Best estimate.
German antimechanised forces were split by role. Regimental antitank companies and the antitank platoons inside heavy-weapons companies existed for local protection. They were not expected to stop a tank attack in force. Division Panzerjäger battalions and GHQ antitank units were treated as a mobile reserve, or as offensive elements, to be committed at the point where the main armoured blow fell, or to travel with the tanks and cover their flanks and rear.[R1]
The change of name from Panzerabwehr (antitank defence) to Panzerjäger (tank hunter) was not cosmetic. A captured German training manual put the offensive task in plain language: by speed, mobility, cross-country performance and protection against tanks, the antitank battalion “can attack enemy armoured vehicles. Its object is to engage and destroy enemy tanks by surprise attacks from unexpected directions with concentrated fire. In addition to engaging enemy tanks, the antitank unit has the task of neutralizing antitank defences, thereby supporting its own tanks.”[R1]
U.S. observers in the desert recorded the same pattern on the ground. A German tank battalion moved in short rushes, using the folds of the ground. Field artillery and antitank weapons were kept up close, unseen until they opened, usually on the flanks of the tank column. The Germans were able to bring effective artillery and antitank fire to bear on British armour before the British could reply in kind.[R2]
Doctrinal tension, not a contradiction. “In spite of the offensive emphasis given to the antitank units of the German Army, their primary mission remains defensive. In performing this defensive mission, however, these units may use some of their offensive tactics with great success.”[R1]For tabletop design this is the load-bearing sentence: the guns exist to stop tanks, but they stop tanks by moving, flanking, concentrating, and shooting first.
| Habit | What it meant in practice | Primary-source anchor |
|---|---|---|
| Flexible | Division and GHQ battalions were a general reserve. They were allotted to lower units as the task required, or held and then thrown in at the critical sector. Composition itself flexed with the available gun types as 3.7 cm gave way to 5 cm and then 7.5 cm. | “Flexibility, which is a characteristic of all German organisation, is especially apparent in the makeup of antitank units… antimechanized forces are employed in support of other arms and change their composition according to the task.”[R1] |
| Aggressive | Where enemy armour was expected, the division battalion went forward with the tanks, objective to objective. Platoon commanders were told to show initiative; a platoon with no tanks in its own sector helped its neighbour. In pursuit, AT platoons attached to the most advanced elements and broke the armoured rearguard. | Captured manual: surprise attacks from unexpected directions with concentrated fire; also the task of neutralizing enemy AT defences in support of own tanks.[R1] |
| Nimble | Emphasis on moving rapidly in and out of position. On an exposed flank the battalion advanced by bounds, companies leap-frogging. Desert practice: short rushes, hull-down pauses, then a new fold of ground. Camouflage of successive attack positions was not required; choice of ground that commanded the approach was. | “In battle, emphasis is placed on antitank units moving rapidly in and out of position.” Leap-frogging companies on an exposed flank.[R1][R6]Desert: battalion “moves in short rushes, taking advantage of the terrain.”[R2] |
| Efficient (Flak as AT) | Early doctrine gave Flak a primary AA role and a secondary AT role “in emergency.” By 1943 Allied intelligence judged the AT role of the 8.8 cm to have virtual priority once battle was joined, especially against armour. Guns covering forward airfields were sometimes pulled into the tank fight. | Intelligence Bulletin, November 1943: once battle is joined, heavy Flak is usually employed against ground targets; AA becomes the exception.[R3] |
| Flanking support | AT weapons sat close to the tank column and opened from the flanks. The armoured-division battalion followed the tanks and engaged threats from flanks and rear. Desert observers recorded AT guns 100–300 yards off a battalion in action, or 500–1,000 yards forward/flank with orders to close in when tanks came inside 1,000 yards. | “Field artillery and antitank weapons are kept up close… usually on the flanks of the tank column.”[R2]“The antitank battalion of an armoured division goes into the attack with the tanks… and engages all tanks threatening them from the flanks and rear.”[R1] |
Reading guide: cell backgrounds white = 1939–41, pale green = 1942–43, pale blue = 1944–45.The 1942 MIS snapshot is richest for mid-war infantry and armoured divisions; late-war mixes of Pak 40, Marder, Hornisse/Nashorn, Jagdpanzer and Hetzer vary sharply by formation.
| Category | Early 1939–41 | Mid 1942–43 | Late 1944–45 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regimental AT company (“14th” company) | Fully mechanised company: headquarters and four platoons. Each platoon three 3.7 cm Pak 36 sections plus a light MG section. Mission: local protection of its regiment against tanks and armoured cars. Not expected to stop a massed tank attack.[R1][R4] | Same skeleton; 5 cm Pak 38 begins to replace 3.7 cm as supply allows. MIS (Oct 1942) still lists the four-platoon, 3.7 cm pattern as standard, with 5 cm substitution underway.[R1] | 1944-type infantry regiment AT company partly motorised, c.186 strong (TM-E 30-451). Mix of remaining Pak 40, infantry AT weapons (Panzerschreck/Panzerfaust at company level), and in some formations SP or StuG attachments. Volksgrenadier organisation diverges.[R4] |
| Divisional Panzerjäger-Abteilung | One battalion per infantry division. Typical early war: three companies of 3.7 cm Pak 36 (often 12 guns per company in the 36-gun battalion picture). Held as the division commander’s mobile reserve against a concerted tank attack.[R5][R6] | MIS standard (Oct 1942): three companies each with four 3.7 cm and six 5 cm, six MGs, transport and a workshop. Battalion total: twelve 3.7 cm, eighteen 5 cm, 18 MG. Signal section with pack and armoured radios. Immediate ammunition with the guns: 180 rounds per 3.7 cm, 38–72 per 5 cm.[R1] | Increasingly a mixed battalion: towed Pak 40 company plus one or more SP companies (Marder, later Hetzer or StuG). Infantry-division Panzerjäger establishments shrink and become uneven; many battalions are cadre-plus-whatever-has-arrived.[R4] |
| Echelon and control | On the march the regimental company travels in the regiment. The divisional battalion stays with the motorised trains in an interior division; on an exposed flank it moves out on that flank by bounds.[R6] | Division battalion and GHQ units always treated as reserve or as offensive elements. Organic companies do local protection. The mobile battalion is committed where the main armoured blow lands.[R1] | Same principle under poorer means: scarce SP and Pak 40 concentrated at the Panzerabwehr-Schwerpunkt rather than lined evenly across the front.[R6] |
| Strength / named pattern | Infantry division commonly carried 60–80 of 3.7 cm guns if the battalion and three regimental companies are counted together.[R7] | MIS battalion snapshot above; plus three regimental companies still largely 3.7 cm / mixed 5 cm. Motorised division also listed with a possible tank-hunter battalion per motorised rifle regiment in some descriptions.[R1][R5] | Best estimate A 1944 infantry division that still has a functioning Panzerjäger battalion is often 10–30 towed Pak 40 plus a scratch SP company, not the tidy 30-gun 1942 picture. |

| Panzer-Division AT battalion | One antitank battalion in the division. Early SP experiment: Panzerjäger I (4.7 cm Pak(t) on Pz.Kpfw. I chassis) formed into independent battalions attached to panzer divisions — three companies of nine vehicles, three-vehicle platoons.[R8] | Desert snapshot: antitank battalion of three companies of at least 10 guns each, “usually includes some antitank guns on self-propelled mounts.” Reconnaissance unit also carries an AT platoon in its support group.[R9]MIS also lists a possible SP battalion of 24 × 4.7 cm on Pz. I chassis as an armoured-division variant.[R5] | Mixed towed Pak 40 and SP (Marder, then Jagdpanzer IV / Panzer IV/70). Independent schwere Panzerjäger-Abteilungen (Nashorn, Jagdpanther) sit at army/corps, not inside every division. |
| Embedded AT platoons | AT platoon in the reconnaissance support group; AT presence in Schützen / motorcycle heavy-weapons companies as the motorised force matures. | Armoured division: AT platoon in each heavy-weapons company of the reconnaissance battalion, motorcycle battalion, and two motorised rifle regiments, in addition to the division battalion.[R1] | Panzergrenadier battalions retain organic AT / infantry-AT. Pressure grows to parcel the division Panzerjäger companies down to the infantry battalions because a pure towed battalion is “only suitable for limited separate employment.”[R10] |
| GHQ / Heerestruppen | Independent motorised AT battalions and the first SP tank-hunter battalions used to weight a corps or army Schwerpunkt. Heavy AT using 8.8 cm Flak appears as an improvisation that becomes a system (France 1940, then Africa).[R8][R11] | GHQ pool: heavy antitank battalions (88 mm and 50 mm), ordinary AT battalions, and SP tank-hunter battalions. Composition “believed to vary widely according to the number of weapons available.”[R1] | Army tank-hunter battalions with Jagdpanther, Nashorn, or Hetzer. Doctrine for Jagdpanther: employ the whole battalion; company as the smallest attachment, and then only to a division; change position in the firefight; bind with part of the force and strike the flank or rear with the mass.[R12] |
| Flak in the AT net | 8.8 cm Flak 18/36 used against ground targets in 1940 when 3.7 cm failed against heavy armour. Could be fired from the Sd.Ah. 201 trailer in an emergency, at cost to the carriage.[R11] | Mobile Luftwaffe Flak battalion often attached to a division. Armoured division in the desert listed with an AA battalion of thirty-three 20 mm guns as part of its AT density; 88s appear as the long-range killer of Matildas and Grants.[R5][R9] | Intelligence Bulletin (Nov 1943): in the advance, heavy Flak’s usual job is AT protection while German armour moves; 88s have accompanied tanks in an assault-gun role; large numbers have been massed under one command when a single point had to be stopped.[R3] |
The armoured-division antitank battalion went into the attack with the tanks and followed them from objective to objective. Its job was every tank that threatened the flanks and rear. Detachments could be lent to the infantry following the tanks if security demanded it. Units of the battalion were not usually parcelled out and forgotten inside larger attack groups; they gave independent support, and platoon commanders were expected to hunt targets on their own initiative.[R1]
Desert practice made the geometry visible. A battalion of 65–80 tanks often used a V with two companies up, or an inverted V with one up. Companies in line, tanks in column of threes at about 50-yard intervals. The whole regiment might advance in mass, lines at 50-yard spacing, in waves — closer than British taste, because it was easier to control. Field artillery and antitank weapons stayed close and silent until they fired, usually from the flanks of that column. Mark IV companies (about 10 tanks) took hull-down positions and shot the British AT and light artillery that the probing tanks had made disclose themselves; light artillery, AT guns and machine guns with the same mission were pushed forward among and to the flanks of the tanks.[R2]
If infantry attacked without tanks, the battalion accompanied them in the same bound-by-bound fashion, except that the main body stayed behind the infantry flanks to smash a counter-attack or an unexpectedly strong pocket. In pursuit, AT was attached by platoons to the most advanced elements: protect the flanks of the point, and destroy the armoured pieces of the enemy rearguard — “thus breaking the backbone of the enemy delaying action.”[R1]
Regimental companies protected their own regiment. The division battalion remained the commander’s mobile reserve. In a regiment used as advance or flank guard the four platoons of its AT company were spread through the column: one gun with the point and two at the tail of the advance party; a platoon at the head and another at the tail of the reserve; the last platoon with the motorised combat trains. An interior division kept the battalion with the motorised trains. A flank division expecting tanks pushed the battalion out on the exposed flank, companies leap-frogging from position to position.[R6]
Primary mission still defensive. Method still mobile. Early information on hostile tanks was treated as the condition for a coordinated reply. All personnel and installations of AT units were required to be ready for tank attack at all times. Continuous reconnaissance of likely tank approaches was doctrine, not a staff nicety.[R1]
In a withdrawal the regimental companies stood on the enemy tank axis. Part of the division battalion could thicken that line. On an exterior or independent division some of the battalion watched the flanks. The remainder split: one part reconnoitred and prepared the next delaying position; the other stayed in the commander’s hand as a mobile reserve.[R1]
A single gun was generally considered unwise. Exceptions existed: blocking a very wide sector, attaching single guns to march columns, or securing a village or specified point against scout cars.[R6]
Desert refinement of the defensive mission. German forces in the 1942 spring fighting showed “great alertness” in throwing an AT screen across their front whenever tanks halted or refuelled, and in protecting flanks at all times. A threat to a flank by tanks was met at once by AT deployment while the German tanks continued to move. A few tanks were pushed forward to draw defensive fire; those tanks pulled back; artillery and mortars beat the guns that had shown themselves; then the real tank attack went in.[R13]
The MIS special series is the cleanest contemporary Anglo-American description of German AT habit in open country. It is not a German field manual. It is what trained observers thought they were seeing after two years of Libyan fighting, and it matches the captured-manual language of the same year.
“A German tank battalion in tactical formation moves in short rushes, taking advantage of the terrain. Frequently the whole regiment advanced in mass formation with lines of tanks at regular intervals of about 50 yards, advancing in waves. The relatively close formation is more readily controlled than a widely dispersed one.Field artillery and antitank weapons are kept up close, although their location is not apparent until they go into action, usually on the flanks of the tank column. The Germans have in the past been able to bring effective artillery and antitank fire to bear on the British before the British could effectively fire upon them.In addition, RAF planes, because of the pilots’ inability to distinguish between their own and German tanks, have not attacked German tank formations in the forward areas.”

| Weapon | In service (front) | Tactical character | Limit against contemporary armour |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.7 cm Pak 36 | 1936–c.1942 as first-line AT | Light enough to manhandle. Accurate. Loved by crews. The gun of Poland and France against most tanks then fielded. | Fails against Matilda, KV, T-34 front. Captured table: harassment of mountings and bogies from 500 m, not reliable penetration.[R17][R11] |
| 5 cm Pak 38 | Issued from late 1940; first two accepted 1 May 1940; missed the French campaign | First “full-sized” AT gun. Split trail, double-skin shield. Bridge weapon until Pak 40 arrived in numbers. | Versus Matilda: upper structure and turret to ~600 m; still struggling with heavy Soviet hull fronts in 1941.[R17][R18] |
| 7.5 cm Pak 40 | First issues late November 1941; standard thereafter | Enlarged Pak 38. The workhorse towed killer of 1942–45. Also used as 7.5 cm FK 40 when folded into divisional artillery. | Heavy. A January 1944 German report noted that a daylight change of position was almost impossible — the “nimble” doctrine colliding with the weight of a gun that could actually kill T-34s.[R18] |
| 8.8 cm Flak 18/36/37 | AA from the 1930s; AT from 1940 as a system | High muzzle velocity, long reach, 360° on the cruciform mount, 15–20 rpm. The gun that restored AT overmatch when 3.7 cm failed. | High silhouette (about 2.4 m). Slow to unlimber properly. Emergency fire from the trailer wrecks the carriage if traversed hard.[R11][R3] |
| SP hunters (Pz.Jg. I, Marder, later Jagdpanzer) | Pz.Jg. I in 1940; Marder 1942; Jagdpanzer / Hetzer 1944 | The organisational answer to “nimble” once towed guns grew too heavy. Ambush, flank, displace. Not a tank, and not meant for a frontal slugging match. | Open-top Marders are fragile under artillery and air. Jagdpanther doctrine still insists on the whole battalion used together and on changing position during the fight.[R8][R12] |
German manuals originally gave Flak in the field an almost exclusive AA task. Ground targets were secondary, and only in emergency. That sentence did not survive contact with Allied and Soviet armour. By November 1943 a U.S. Intelligence Bulletin described Flak in the field as “a powerful and highly mobile striking force,” with the emphasis on ground employment and on an offensive capacity beside spearhead formations.[R3]
The same bulletin is explicit about priority. The old sequence was: primary AA, secondary AT, exceptional field-artillery use. Experience had made the 8.8 cm “an indispensable complement to the German Army’s antitank artillery.” Once battle was joined — attack or defence, and especially where armour was present — heavy Flak usually shot at ground targets; the AA role became the exception. Guns that had been sited to protect a forward airfield were sometimes dragged into the tank fight. In an advance the batteries’ usual function was AT protection during the movement of German armoured vehicles. The 88s had also gone forward with tanks in an assault-gun role. The battery remained the normal fire unit, but large numbers of 88s had been gathered under one command when maximum AT strength had to sit on a single point.[R3]
That is the “efficient” habit in the opening list: an AA branch doctrinally allowed, then expected, to carry an AT mission without waiting for a staff re-label.
The historically defensible tabletop choices follow the sources rather than the popular “Pak front” cartoon.
Design rules of thumb.(1) Regimental AT is local security, not the division’s tank-killing plan.(2) The division / GHQ battalion is a reserve or an attacking escort — commit it as a packet, not a string of lone guns.(3) Movement is the point: bounds, leap-frog, shoot-and-shift.(4) Flank geometry beats frontal duels.(5) Flak is an AT asset once the tank fight starts, at the cost of the sky.(6) Primary mission is still to stop tanks; the method is offensive tactics in a defensive task.
| Capability | Who owns it | How to resolve | Tokens / delays / costs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regimental AT screen | Infantry regiment “14th” company; AT platoons in heavy-weapons companies | May deploy with the regiment on the march and in local defence. Can kill light armour and force mediums to pause. Cannot by itself stop a committed tank battalion. | Token: Local AT. If used up holding a flank, the regiment is naked against a second tank probe. |
| Division Panzerjäger commitment | Division commander’s reserve | Held off-table or in depth until a tank axis is identified, then committed as a company or battalion at that point. Bonus if arriving on a flank or into a prepared bound position. | Delay 0–2 turns to arrive. Token: Pz.Jg. Reserve. Once committed, expensive to recover the same turn. |
| Attack escort / flanking packet | Armoured-division AT battalion; GHQ SP hunters | May move with the tank formation. Fires on the first enemy AFVs that appear on the flanks or rear of the tank packet. May also be tasked to suppress enemy AT that the probing tanks have revealed. | Must stay within a declared distance of the tank body or lose the “kept up close” benefit. Token: Flank AT. |
| Short rushes / leap-frog | Any towed or SP AT element | After firing, the element may attempt a bound to a new fire position instead of staying. Easier for SP and 3.7 cm; harder for Pak 40; hardest for unlimbered 88s. | Failed bound = caught in the open. Pak 40 daylight bound at a penalty (1944 German comment on almost-impossible daylight moves).[R18] |
| Probe–reveal–kill sequence | Tank company plus AT / artillery observers | A small tank probe may force enemy AT to fire. Mark every gun that fired. Artillery / Mark IV / AT then shoot those marked guns before the main tank wave goes in.[R2][R13] | Tokens: Disclosed AT, Prepared Strike. Defender who holds fire stays hidden but may not stop the probe. |
| Flak in the ground role | Attached Luftwaffe heavy Flak; some army 88 AT battalions | Once battle is joined against armour, treat heavy Flak as AT with long reach and high silhouette. May mass at one point under a single command. | While shooting tanks, AA cover over that sector drops. Token: Sky Naked. Emergency fire from the trailer: may fire now, risk immobilising the gun.[R3][R11] |
| Halt / refuel AT drill | Any German armoured Kampfgruppe | When tanks halt, AT must deploy a front and flank screen before the halt counts as “secure.” A flank threat is answered by AT deployment while tanks keep moving.[R13] | If the player skips the screen, enemy tanks that reach the halt zone fire at stationary, crowded AFVs. |
